Widenham residents playing sports

Live an active, sporty life at Widenham

We love a good sport at Widenham – it’s about the fun of the game, the fresh air and the camaraderie! Our community is designed to offer a variety of sporting activities that not only promotes physical health, but also fosters a sense of community, competition and spirited company among our residents.

If we think back to our school days, sport was always something that brought us joy, excitement, and a sense of achievement. It was a time to bond with friends, learn teamwork, and experience the thrill of competition.

Whether it was a friendly game of soccer, a spirited cricket match, or a playful run during recess, sports provided us with unforgettable memories and vital life skills. At Widenham Retirement Village, we strive to create that same level of fun, exhilaration and fellowship through our diverse range of sporting activities. This ensures that our residents continue to enjoy the benefits and joys of staying active together.

This sense of team spirit only gets better as we get older, because we can now value the time spent without focusing on the high stakes of winning or losing. Widenham residents participate in the creation of daily life. This means our sports clubs are formed by the residents themselves who manage the games and schedule the get togethers.

Playing a sport and joining a club is a great way to stay active, while improving mental and physical health. Let’s not forget this is also great for the joints too, keeping muscles and reflexes strong.

Here’s a glimpse of some of the sports on offer at Widenham:

Table tennis

Table tennis at Widenham is always a lively affair. It’s a fantastic way to improve hand-eye coordination, reflexes, and mental agility, all while having loads of fun. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a novice, you’ll find our table tennis community welcoming of all new players. There’s nothing like the thrill of a fast-paced game to get your heart pumping and your face smiling.

This game is one of agility and precision, demanding both mental and physical sharpness. Physically, it requires quick reflexes, fast footwork, and excellent hand-eye coordination. The rapid exchanges and swift movements enhance cardiovascular fitness and help maintain overall physical agility. Mentally, table tennis is equally stimulating. Players must anticipate their opponent’s moves, strategise on the fly, and maintain focus throughout the match. This combination of mental and physical engagement makes table tennis an ideal activity for keeping both the body and mind in top form.

Bowls

This classic sport combines skill, strategy, and a bit of friendly competition. Widenham has two bowls fields which speaks to its popularity.

The benefits of bowls are untold, physically it helps improve balance, coordination, and flexibility, as players need to deliver their bowls with precision and control. This gentle, low-impact exercise is easy on the joints while still providing a good workout for the muscles. Mentally, bowls require strategic thinking and concentration, as players must plan their shots, anticipate their opponents’ moves, and adapt their tactics throughout the game. The social aspect of bowls also promotes mental well-being, offering opportunities for friendly competition and camaraderie, which are essential for maintaining a positive and engaged mind.

Golf

Widenham’s proximity to several golf clubs makes it easy for residents to hit the greens.

Golf at Widenham is more than just a game; it’s a delightful blend of exercise, strategy, and social fun! Physically, it’s the perfect moderate workout, as strolling the lush greens, swinging the club, and managing your gear keeps you fit and flexible. Each swing helps improve your coordination and balance, making sure you stay on top of your game. Mentally, golf is a brilliant challenge, requiring you to focus, plan your shots, and solve the puzzle of the course. Let’s not forget the joy of being outdoors, soaking in the serene surroundings and sharing laughs with fellow golfers. It’s a fantastic way to stay active, sharp, and happy!

Caravan adventures

Some might say taking your caravan on the road is a sport in itself. At Widenham, a group of our residents have formed a caravan club, aptly named the Widenham Wanderers. Caravans are kept on the Widenham estate in a secure area, giving residents peace of mind. For those who love adventure, caravan holidays provide a fantastic opportunity for like-minded explorers to travel together and discover new places.

In June, our 12-caravan tour rolled out, creating lasting memories along the coast. Highlights included the scenic Richards Bay Ski Boat Club and the enchanting sounds of wildlife at Futululu Forest Park. The tour from Ballito to Bahati was a remarkable journey, offering stunning coastal views and plenty of opportunities for bonding. Keep an eye out for our Widenham Wanderers as they explore the coast!

Our diverse range of sporting activities, from table tennis and bowls to golf and caravan  tours, ensures that our residents stay healthy, happy, and connected.
