Life at Widenham is always on-the-go. Our residents find time to pursue their passions, whether it’s taking part in community activities at Widenham, engaging in sports competitions, or simply enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. At Widenham Retirement Village, active living at Widenham is a core part of who we are and our vibrant community thrives on the energy and enthusiasm of our residents. Here’s a look at some of the popular sports and activities that bring our community together.
Swimming
Swimming is a beloved pastime for many Widenham residents. We’ve got a large pool where residents hold water aerobics classes and train for the Midmar Mile! As you can see we have a wide range of swimmers at all levels. A popular event that a few residents take part in is the Dolphin Mile swim.
The Dolphin Mile swim is a well-orchestrated event that takes place at Addington Beach near South Beach, drawing participants from all age groups. It’s a fantastic event where our residents can showcase their swimming skills while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow swimmers. A special congratulations goes out to Ivan, who recently completed his 20th Dolphin Mile Swim—a remarkable achievement! We’re proud of Ivan, Peta, and Geoff for their incredible efforts, and we’re looking forward to seeing who will join them in the next race.
Park Run
Park Run has really opened the door to community walking groups across the country. At Widenham, we have a group who enjoy this weekly event. It is a great addition to the weekly walking activities that our residents do, particularly with the Striders and Strollers club. Widenham walking groups are incredibly popular, offering participants a chance to challenge themselves while enjoying the great outdoors. We’re especially proud of Linda, who recently completed her 250th Park Run. At Widenham, we’re all about supporting one another, and Linda’s achievement is just one of many we celebrate. Keep going, Linda—we’re behind you every step of the way!
Bowls
Bowls is a classic sport that enjoys great popularity among our residents, offering both a relaxing and competitive environment. The Scottburgh Bowls Tournament is one of the highlights of our sports calendar, attracting teams eager to showcase their skills on the green. Recently, our own Georgie, Jill, Ellen, and Cheryl made us proud by securing second place in the tournament. The event was a fantastic opportunity for friendly competition, with plenty of support from fellow residents. Special thanks to Paul, our Greens Keeper, for his hard work in ensuring the tournament’s success.
Walk on the beach
Walking is one of the simplest yet most rewarding activities, and our Trailblazers Beach Walk is a popular club and event that perfectly blends exercise with the beauty of the coast. Residents at Widenham love staying connected with nature while embracing active living at Widenham, whether it’s during a group walk or participating in other outdoor activities. This group walk allows residents to set their own pace, taking in the breathtaking scenery of the shoreline. Recently, we had a fantastic turnout for the walk, with residents enjoying the feel of sand underfoot and the gentle waves lapping at the shore. The sun was shining, the mood was light, and everyone left with a smile and a little extra dose of Vitamin D.
